THE
AGORA
The
ancient Agora (market in Greek) was
not only the commercial center of
the city, but its political,
cultural and religious center as
well..The Athenians were gathered
here daily, not only to buy and
sell, but also to learn the news,
to criticise the government, to
exchange views or just gossip.
The site includes monuments from
the Classical periods to the 11th
century AD( the church of Agioi
Apostoloi).
THE THISSION -
HEPHAISTEION
Despite its name, it was not a
temple dedicated to Thisseas
but to the god Hephaistos
and the goddess Athena,
statues of which sculpted by Alkamenes
are housed in it. It is the best
preserved temple of ancient
times, built in 449 B.C.
THE MONUMENT OF THE
EPONYMOUS HEROES
The statues of the 10
heroes after whom the 10 tribes
of Attica were named (4th century
B.C.) were placed here. All
public announcements were posted
on the pedestals of those
statues.
