Piraeus, Rafina & Attica coast

Port of Pireaus, known in medieval times as Porto Leone, is the main port of Athens. Easily accessible by subway and busses from Athens. The ride from Omonia is approximately half an hour and the subway station is right across the point of embarkation for the Cyclades islands. The bus ride takes approx. 40min. Bus No 049. It is advisable to have your ticket purchased in advance. Last moment issue sometimes creates problems due to "system down" of the computers early in the morning etc.

Sounion. Long on the itinerary of tourists and romantics, the colonnaded 4th century BC fine Doric Temple of Poseidon guards Cape Sounio (67 km. along the beautiful coastal road.). The temple is 'graffitied' by Lord Byron and the view is renowned, especially for its spectacular sunsets. The cape marks the spot where Athens’ King Aegeas cast himself into the sea after his son, hero Thesseas, returned from killing the Minotaur in Cretan King Minos’ labyrinth but forgot to change the colour of the ship’s sails, signaling he had survived. The sea bears the bereaved king’s name. (Aegean sea).

Port of Rafina, a second port one hour away from Athens or 20 minutes from Athens airport. Regular bus service from Mavromateon St. near the Athens archaeological museum. Daily ferry service to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos and Paros.
